Hello, I’m Heeyoung! Welcome to Lal_la Korean. 🎶
In Korean, when you want to deliver or report what someone else said, we use Indirect Speech (간접화법). Depending on whether the original sentence was a statement, a question, a command, or a suggestion, the ending changes. Let’s learn these patterns together so you can chat like a pro!

🔍 Detailed Conjugation by Tense & Category

Indirect speech endings vary slightly based on the part of speech (Verb, Adjective, or Noun).

  • Verb: Add -는다고 (if there’s a final consonant) or -ㄴ다고 (if no final consonant).
    • 먹다 → 먹는다고 / 가다 → 간다고
  • Adjective: Simply add -다고.
    • 예쁘다 → 예쁘다고 / 좋다 → 좋다고
  • Noun: Use -이라고 (with final consonant) or -라고 (without).
    • 학생 → 학생이라고 / 의사 → 의사라고

2. Past & Future Tense (Common for all)

  • Past-았/었다고 (e.g., 먹었다고 했어요)
  • Future-겠다고 or -(으)ㄹ 거라고 (e.g., 가겠다고 했어요 / 갈 거라고 했어요)

⚠️ Special Rules to Remember

In commands, ‘주다’ changes based on the recipient:

  • -주라고 하다: When the speaker wants you to give something to a third person.
    • “지민 씨에게 책을 주세요.” → 지민 씨에게 책을 주라고 했어요.

2. Negative Forms

  • Command: 하지 마세요 → 하지 말라고 해요.
  • Suggestion: 하지 마요 → 하지 말자고 해요.
