Have you ever wanted to say, “Sorry I’m late,” in Korean?

You may know this sentence:

늦어서 미안해요.
I’m sorry I’m late.

But can you also say this?

❌ 늦느라고 미안해요.

No—you cannot. 늦느라고 is not natural Korean.

Both -아서/어서 and -느라고 can explain a reason, but they work in very different ways. Let’s learn when to use each one!

1. -아서/어서: A General Reason or Cause

Use -아서/어서 when the first clause explains the reason for the second clause.

It can be used with:

  • action verbs
  • descriptive verbs/adjectives
  • states and situations

The result can be positive, negative, or neutral.

How to make it

Dictionary form-아서/어서 form
가다가서
먹다먹어서
바쁘다바빠서
춥다추워서
늦다늦어서

Examples

비가 와서 집에 있었어요.
I stayed home because it rained.

피곤해서 일찍 잤어요.
I went to bed early because I was tired.

길이 막혀서 늦었어요.
I was late because there was traffic.

한국어가 재미있어서 매일 공부해요.
I study Korean every day because Korean is fun.

늦어서 미안해요.
I’m sorry I’m late.

In the final example, 늦다 describes a state or result: being late. It is not an action that someone actively spends time doing. That is why we use 늦어서, not 늦느라고.

2. -느라고: Being Busy Doing Something Caused a Negative Result

Use -느라고 when you were busy doing a particular action, and that action caused a negative result or prevented you from doing something else.

Think of it like this:

I was busy doing A, so B went wrong.

How to make it

Attach -느라고 to an action verb stem.

Dictionary form-느라고 form
가다가느라고
먹다먹느라고
공부하다공부하느라고
일하다일하느라고
드라마를 보다드라마를 보느라고

Examples

공부하느라고 친구를 못 만났어요.
I couldn’t meet my friend because I was busy studying.

게임하느라고 숙제를 안 했어요.
I did not do my homework because I was busy playing games.

길을 찾느라고 늦었어요.
I was late because I was busy looking for the way.

드라마를 보느라고 밤을 샜어요.
I stayed up all night because I was busy watching a drama.

보고서를 쓰느라고 점심을 못 먹었어요.
I couldn’t eat lunch because I was busy writing a report.

Notice that the second clause usually has a negative or undesirable result:

  • 못 했어요 — could not do
  • 안 했어요 — did not do
  • 늦었어요 — was late
  • 깜빡했어요 — forgot
  • 밤을 샜어요 — stayed up all night
  • 지하철을 놓쳤어요 — missed the subway

3. Why Is “늦느라고” Wrong?

Let’s return to our original question.

❌ 늦느라고 미안해요.
✅ 늦어서 미안해요.

늦다 means to be late. It describes the result or state of being late, not an action you actively perform.

You do not “spend time being late.” Instead, you spend time doing another action—and that action makes you late.

So, use -느라고 with the actual action that caused the delay.

준비하느라고 늦었어요.
I was late because I was busy getting ready.

길을 헤매느라고 늦었어요.
I was late because I was busy wandering around / trying to find my way.

친구를 기다리느라고 늦었어요.
I was late because I was busy waiting for my friend.

드라마를 보느라고 늦었어요.
I was late because I was busy watching a drama.

4. Same Result, Different Cause

Compare these sentences:

SentenceMeaningGrammar point
길이 막혀서 늦었어요.I was late because of traffic.A general cause
길을 찾느라고 늦었어요.I was late because I was busy looking for the way.An action took time
늦어서 미안해요.I’m sorry I’m late.A current state/result
준비하느라고 늦었어요.I was late because I was busy getting ready. An action caused the delay
피곤해서 일찍 잤어요.I went to bed early because I was tired.A state caused a result
숙제하느라고 못 잤어요.I could not sleep because I was busy doing homework. An action prevented another action

5. Can We Use Past Tense Before -느라고?

Usually, no.

❌ 밥을 먹었느라고 늦었어요.
✅ 밥을 먹느라고 늦었어요.

Even when the whole event happened in the past, the verb before -느라고 normally stays in its basic present-style form.

어제 밤에 공부하느라고 늦게 잤어요.
I went to bed late last night because I was studying.

The past tense is shown at the end of the sentence:

  • 잤어요
  • 늦었어요
  • 못 만났어요
  • 깜빡했어요

6. Can We Use -느라고 for a Positive Result?

Usually, no.

❌ 한국어를 공부하느라고 한국어를 잘하게 됐어요.
✅ 한국어를 공부해서 한국어를 잘하게 됐어요.

Why? 한국어를 잘하게 됐어요 (I became good at Korean) is a positive result. For a general positive cause-and-result relationship, use -아서/어서.

운동을 해서 건강해졌어요.
I became healthier because I exercised.

열심히 연습해서 피아노를 잘 쳐요.
I play the piano well because I practiced hard.

7. Let’s Practice

  6. 준비하느라고

Lal-la! Final Tip

Ask yourself this question:

Was I busy doing an action, and did that action cause a negative result?

  • Yes → Use -느라고
  • No. It is simply a reason, state, or general cause. → Use -아서/어서

For example:

시험공부하느라고 연락을 못 했어요.
I could not contact you because I was busy studying for the exam.

시험공부를 해서 자신감이 생겼어요.
I gained confidence because I studied for the exam.

The action is the same—studying for an exam—but the result is different. That is why the grammar changes.

늦느라고 ❌, 늦어서 ✅! Lal-la!
